The Wallet Material Transparency Audit 2026
This is not a ranking of products. It is an audit of publicly verifiable information.
24 wallet and EDC brands, evaluated on one question: how much of what they sell can you verify on their own website?
Methodology
Nine criteria in three groups. Weights reflect how central each disclosure is to knowing what a product is made of.
- Identity (what is it made of): Leather maker named (20), Composite maker named (20), Thread maker named (10), Titanium grade specified (10)
- Manufacturing (where and on what terms): Country of manufacture (10), Warranty defined (10), Repair policy published (10)
- Accountability (can anyone check): Third-party certifications (10), Traceability documentation (10)
Full points for a verifiable YES, half for PARTIAL (named only in a blog post, defined with gaps, or covering only part of the catalog), zero for adjectives. Criteria a brand's catalog does not trigger are excluded and the score is normalized: percentage = points earned / points applicable. Warranty is scored on the primary policy document; cross-page inconsistencies are listed separately in Appendix A.
Scope of the audit
This audit measures only information that was publicly accessible on each brand's official website on the audit date.
It does not assess product quality, manufacturing quality, durability, ethics or customer satisfaction.
A score of 20% does not mean a poor product. It means that 20% of the evaluated information could be independently verified from the brand's own public documentation.
Evidence confidence
High. Every entry was reviewed manually against the brand's own website before publication. No automated scoring was used. Every scored finding carries a source URL, published in the full evidence table.

Across 24 brands
Key findings
Large luxury houses generally publish less supplier information than smaller independent manufacturers. Montblanc, Dunhill, Smythson and Aspinal of London describe their leather as coming from "Florentine tanneries" or "LWG certified tanneries" without naming a single company. At the same time, all four publish repair services, which most younger EDC brands do not: transparency has more than one dimension.
One brand explicitly offers no guarantee. Smythson: "We do not offer guarantees for any of our products."
Only one brand operates a walk-in repair network for wallets. Secrid, with 1,400 Care & Repair points.
6 of 24 brands name their tannery on their own website. Secrid, Bellroy, Popov Leather, Trayvax, Craft and Lore, Nomad Goods.
What was NOT evaluated
This audit does not evaluate durability, craftsmanship, design, value, aesthetics, customer service or ethics. A low score does not mean a bad product. It means the brand's website does not let you verify what the product is made of. Only public material transparency is measured.
How we scored
- Evidence rules: only content on the brand's own official website counts. Third-party reviews, retailer listings and press coverage do not. Blog posts on the brand's domain count as PARTIAL when the same information is absent from product and materials pages.
- Why PARTIAL: half points acknowledge disclosure that exists but is incomplete, buried, category-limited or inconsistent.
- Normalization: brands are scored only on criteria their catalog triggers. A leather-only brand is not penalized for having no titanium grade to publish.
- Review policy: we review only publicly available information. Brands are scored on what their website says on the audit date, not on what they told us privately.
Limitations
This audit verifies disclosure, not accuracy. It measures what a brand states publicly and how specifically, not whether the statement is true. A published claim can be false; an unpublished truth cannot be verified. On-site inspection of factories and materials is outside the scope of this document.
Brands may publish additional information after the audit date. Information provided privately to customers was not considered. Information available only through retailers was excluded. Pages that failed to load on the audit date are noted as unverifiable rather than scored negatively where applicable.
